Golfers earn sips from the boot in Woodstock’s season-opening tournament in memory of Fred Sappier
The 29th annual Fred Sappier Rubber Boot Open on May 31 at the Woodstock Golf and Curling Club gave 25 golfers a day of mixed weather. Early birds had good golfing conditions, but later arrivals to the tournament may have wanted to borrow the coveted rubber boots.
Winners of the event were Andrew Bird, who shot a 60, and Wendy Giberson, who golfed a 67. Brandon Schlichter earned a second-low net of 61, with Jocelyn Kierstead shooting 71.
Earning the Kelti Burnett Memorial Shoot-Out titles that day were Hunter Harding and Wendy Giberson, with Brandon Sappier and Wending Giberson earning the Jack Kitchen Memorial Award for ‘closest to the pin.’
The tournament is a labour of love for organizer Shawn Sappier. He says the event helps him keep the memory of his father, Fred Sappier, alive.
“Dad’s been gone 31 years now. My father was a big golfer,” said Sappier. “He loved golf.”
