Florenceville-Bristol plant gets five-year renewal
The province has issued a new Class 1 air quality approval for the McCain Foods frozen food plant in Carleton County.
Each hour, the plant in the Florenceville-Bristol district of Carleton North produces more than 16,000 kilograms of French fries, about 5,000 kilograms of specialty potato products, 13,800 pizza pockets, and 4,600 cakes.
The plant underwent a formal public review process, a regular occurrence for a Class 1 facility, which McCain Foods is.
A Class 1 source of air pollution is a facility that has a permitted rate of release of one or more of the following:
- gas, exceeding three thousand actual cubic metres per minute
- sulfur dioxide, exceeding two hundred and fifty tonnes per year
- particulate matter, exceeding two hundred and fifty tonnes per year
Class 1 sources release the most emissions in the province. There are about 18 Class 1 facilities in New Brunswick, including power plants, pulp mills, and large manufacturing plants. Other sources are designated as Class 2, 3, or 4 facilities based on their emissions levels.
The current approval expires on Feb. 28, with the new five-year approval taking effect on March 1. The approval follows a public consultation process that included a public review from July 30 to Dec. 8, 2025.
The information, along with the approval conditions, can be viewed on the Department of Environment and Local Government website or at any regional office.
Class 1 major industries are required to comply with the Air Quality Regulation under the Clean Air Act, and to operate under the terms and conditions established in the approval to operate.
