The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving serious injuries sustained by an adult male and female during a pursuit and arrest near Plaster Rock.

SiRT is an independent police oversight agency responsible for conducting investigations into incidents that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence or any matter of public interest that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

In a news release dated April 21, it stated that preliminary information suggests the following:

  • In the late morning of April 11, 2026, members of the New Brunswick RCMP were dispatched to a store where an adult male was threatening employees. The male had left the store, but officers learned he had outstanding arrest warrants.
  • RCMP members located the male driver and attempted to stop him. The male did not stop, and a pursuit occurred but was eventually called off.
  • Shortly after, RCMP members located the male again and tried to stop him. The male fled, and a pursuit started.
  • The male crashed his vehicle. The male and female passengers were taken to the hospital. The male was diagnosed with serious injuries, including broken ribs. The female passenger was diagnosed with a broken pelvis.

Due to the serious injuries, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
