Unifor hosts march in community to urge all levels of government to protect industry
On Friday, Oct. 16, at 9 a.m., there will be a rally to support forestry jobs in Nackawic-Millville. The march will begin at the town’s public library at 30 Landegger Drive and will end at the Big Axe on Nackawic’s waterfront.
The rally, held on Unifor’s Forestry National Day of Action, supports forestry workers losing their jobs after the AV Group announced it would close its Nackawic mill.
“Members, their families and community supporters are coming together to call on all levels of government to take action to protect forestry jobs and the communities that depend on them,” said Unifor National Communications Representative Haeley DiRisio.
Unifor Local 219 National President Lana Payne and Atlantic Regional Director Jennifer Murray, along with union members, will attend to march with families, friends, and community supporters of those affected by the closure.
Nackawic-Millville Mayor Tim Fox said he hopes the rally will raise awareness of the forestry industry’s importance to New Brunswick.
“We are pleased to have Unifor host the Forestry National Day of Action in our community and hope that it has a positive impact on drawing attention to the forest industry and its importance to not only our community, but our province and nation,” said Fox.
