30th Annual Fred Sappier Rubber Boot Open happening this weekend

On May 30, the Woodstock Golf and Curling Club will open their 2026 season with the 30th Annual Fred Sappier Rubber Boot tournament.

“After my father had passed, I approached the golf club to try and see if I could host the invitational tournament in his name there,” explained Shawn Sappier, son of the late Fred Sappier, for whom the event is named.

“It didn’t pan out the way we thought it was going to, so the club approached me before the following year started and asked if I’d like my father’s name on the rubber boot tournament, which was their official kick off,” continued Sappier

“He was an avid golfer … [and] a sports-oriented guy,” he recollected.

The weather for the tournament looks cool and slightly overcast, providing excellent playing conditions.

“I think he’d be pretty proud of the family putting this on in his name and … its a lot of his friends playing it,” explained Sappier when asked how his father would think of the event and its longevity.

In the coming day, watch the River Valley Sun’s website for tournament results.

Fred Sappier’s family takes part in the tournament every year, from left, grandson Skylar Sappier, son Shawn Sappier, and grandson Brayden Sappier. (Submitted photo)
