Annual event raises more than $5,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation’s battle to eradicate cancer
Upper St. John River Valley residents have gathered in Bath for more than four decades to celebrate Terry Fox’s legacy and raise money for the cancer-fighting foundation he founded.
On Sept. 15, over 100 people participated online or in person in the 43rd annual Terry Fox Run, sponsored by the Bath Lions Club. The event raised over $5,000 for the foundation.
On behalf of the Bath Lions Club, Gerald Sullivan said the great turnout helped the club surpass its fundraising goal.
He said a beautiful fall day greeted the approximately 75 people who walked the two-km or five-km routes.
“Staying with tradition, participants were treated to world famous corn chowder and barbecued hotdogs,” explained Sullivan. “Many remained after the run to socialize and reminisce of past Terry Fox Runs.”
He said that over the 43 years the Bath Lions Club hosted the run, it has become a community event, now in its third generation of families.
“These families were acknowledged at this year’s run. In addition, seven individuals were given 40-year plagues from the Terry Fox Foundation,” said Sullivan. “These people have been present at a Terry Fox Run for 40 or more years.”
The plaque recipients were Gus and Sandra Hargrove, Brian and Rosemary Brennan, Danny McCarthy and Angie Brennan-McCarthy, and Charles Corcoran.
Noting that the Bath Lions Terry Fox Run is the only existing run in Carleton and Victoria counties, Sullivan said the club plans to continue the run for as long as possible.
“It is the community spirit and sense of tradition established by our many returning participants that makes Terry’s dream of a world free of cancer a possibility,” he said.
Sullivan said this year’s motto, “No Matter What,” applies to the many people and working Lions who made this year a success.
“We’ll see you next year ‘No Matter What'” he said.
