Police asking residents to avoid area
The Woodstock Police Force is urging the public to exercise extreme caution as a black bear was sighted near the wooded area between Woodstock High School and Smith’s Landscaping on Wednesday morning, June 12. The bear was startled back into the woods, but it’s crucial for the public to avoid this area for their safety.
Attacks by black bears on people are very rare, but there is still a risk.
If you ever encounter a black bear, wildlife experts say you must stay calm and determine if the bear sees you. If the bear is unaware of you, move away quietly. However, if the bear is aware of you, talk to the bear in a low tone, wave your arms, back away, and leave the area. If you are near a building or car, get inside as a precaution.
