Volunteers recognized with Carleton Victoria Outstanding Citizen Awards

The heart and spirit of rural New Brunswick were on full display this spring as residents from across Carleton and Victoria counties gathered at the Centreville Elks Lodge on June 7 to celebrate the outstanding individuals who make their communities stronger, kinder, and more connected.

Hosted by the Carleton Victoria Outstanding Citizen Awards committee, the 2025 Outstanding Citizen Awards recognized volunteers whose passion and tireless efforts have left a lasting impact, from gathering thousands of pyjamas for women and children to serving on local boards and providing essential support for seniors across the region.

“These awards shine a light on the everyday champions who quietly shape the future of our towns and villages,” said President Doris Dickson. “We’re proud to recognize the selfless spirit that defines our region. It’s humbling and deeply inspiring.”

Since its inception in 2017, the annual event has celebrated the contributions of more than 80 community leaders. This year’s recipients were introduced individually, with nominators sharing heartfelt stories. Each honouree was presented with a handcrafted plaque by local artisans James Alison and Barbara Mead of Florenceville-Bristol.

Adding a fresh and creative touch to the event, centrepieces were designed by the talented young artists of the local 4H Art group. Guests also participated in a basket giveaway, which raised $340 for Sanctuary House in Woodstock—a local shelter offering vital support and safety to women and families.

“It’s a joy to celebrate the ones who show up, step in, and lift others up—never asking for the spotlight. But today, they get it. And they’ve absolutely earned it,” said Emcee and CVOCA Secretary Alanda Banks-MacLeod.

Margaret Johnson, MLA for Carleton-Victoria, alongside local dignitaries from the three districts, spoke about the profound impact volunteers have on the vitality and resilience of their towns and villages.

The recipients for 2025:

· Stuart (Stu) MacElwain

· Dorean Gray

· Andrea Callahan

· Kim & Brent Pearson

· Rosanna Mazerolle

· Dean & Krista McCarthy

The afternoon closed with a strong sense of pride and renewed energy for the year ahead. Moving to a spring format this year, the banquet proved once again that recognizing community heroes is a timeless and unifying tradition.
