The Dec. 9 meeting will be the final one of the year. Council will reconvene on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026.
Student Councillor Program to resume
Deputy Mayor Karen Hargrove announced that the District of Carleton North would resume the student councillor program, marking the third year of the program.
Hargrove explained that the district works with the Carleton North High School student council in the selection process.
“They will appoint through their voting process two members [to serve on the district council]. The recommendation is to have one member in Grade 9 or 10 and one member in Grade 11 or 12,” she said. Hargrove noted that it would be an “exciting year” for the students to serve with the upcoming 2026 municipal elections.
Dangerous and Unsightly Premises resolution
DCN Chief Administrative Officer Amy McIntosh told council that complaints have been received about a property located at 185 Juniper Road. DCN Public Safety Manager Tristan Sipprell told council the site violates the Dangerous Buildings and Structures and Unsightly Premises by-law.
McIntosh explained that the building is vacant and poses a public safety hazard due to its dilapidation and structural unsoundness. The condition of the property also creates potential safety concerns for surrounding residents and the general public.
There has been no response to their notice of violations or the registered notice to comply, sent in August. The recommendation from the Public Safety Manager is to undertake the necessary actions up to and including demolition.
Council voted to pursue the recommendations to clean up the property, removing any dilapidated buildings and structures, and filling in the foundation as necessary.
