Firefighters battle blaze through high winds and frigid temperatures in Scott Siding

A Monday evening blaze on Feb. 17 destroyed a mobile home under renovation on Scott Siding Road near Canterbury.

Canterbury Fire Department Chief Mike Furrow said members of his department, with mutual aid from the Meductic and Debec fire departments, battled the raging fire through high winds and bitter temperatures. He said the blaze destroyed the structure.

Furrow said the owner recently purchased the used mini home and placed it on a lot on Scott Siding Road, approximately seven kilometres from Canterbury. He explained the owner was doing major renovations to the structure, including significant work already completed.

The chief said the building owner had worked on the mini-home earlier in the day, but no one was there when the fire broke out. He said the owner had not yet restored electricity to the building.

Furrow said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

He said a snow-plow driver noticed the fire when passing by at 5:35 p.m. Monday, immediately alerting the fire department.

Furrow said the structure was fully involved when the first firefighters arrived on the scene, with flames coming from both ends of the trailer.

“The high winds spread the fire fast,” he said.

In a social media post, Chief Furrow thanked the strong turnout of firefighters and the support of others as they battled the elements to subdue the blaze.

“Thank you to Meductic Fire for tanker and manpower support,” he wrote. “Thank you to Debec Fire for supporting the pump operations and air bottle replacement and filling.  Also thanks to our special Ladies Auxiliary of Canterbury Fire Department for the hot coffee at the scene and the lunch afterwards. It was a bitter cold evening with high winds and a minus-25 windchill.”
