Learn how to protect yourself, family, neighbours against common scams
On Sept 18, at 9:30 a.m., Lisa Legere, with the NB Financial and Consumer Services Commission, will host a free-to-attend Fraud Prevention Seminar at the Debec Women’s Institute Hall at 254 Debec Road, Debec.
This seminar will teach practical tips and provide guidance to help protect yourself, your family, and neighbours against common scams.
In 2024, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Canadians reported losing over $647 million to fraud.
A significant portion of these incidents are linked to impersonation scams, investment fraud, and increasing reliance on artificial intelligence.
Statistics indicate that only 5 to 10 per cent of fraud is reported, which means the losses are actually far higher.
In 2019, Statistics Canada data noted that fraud was the most common crime in Canada, with 17 per cent of Canadians, aged 15 and up, reporting being a victim of fraud in the prior five years.
Frauds and scams come in many different forms, so they can sometimes be difficult to spot. Attendees will be able to protect themselves by learning about:
– common types of fraud and scams
– spotting the red flags of fraud
– recognizing signs of financial abuse
– reporting fraud and scams
Everyone is welcome to join the information session. There will be refreshments provided. If you require more information, you can contact Angela Scott at (506) 277-6340.
