Man wanted in Connecticut on sex charges

A fugitive, wanted on criminal charges in the United States, has been arrested by the RCMP in Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation).

Scott Scharr, an American citizen, appeared in custody at the Court of King’s Bench in Woodstock on Dec. 18 before Chief Justice Tracey Deware. He was arrested on a warrant issued under the federal Extradition Act.

Jacqueline Palumbo, legal counsel to the Attorney General of Canada in Ottawa, appeared via video for the court hearing.

Palumbo told the court Scharr was wanted in the State of Connecticut on charges of invitation to sexual touching and possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material.

Palumbo said the Attorney General would seek an extradition order to return Scharr to U.S. authorities.

Justice Deware remanded Scharr to the Madawaska jail to await a bail hearing on Dec. 29 at 11 a.m.

Palumbo advised the court she would be present in Woodstock at that time.

Defence Counsel Lindsay Paul said Scharr will seek bail pending an extradition hearing.
