Town offers activities leading up to and during once-in-a-lifetime celestial event

Towns throughout Carleton County are gearing up to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime total solar eclipse, set to happen on April 8, 2024.

It is the first time that the path of totality has crossed central New Brunswick in over 1,000 years, and it won’t happen again for another 55 years. The Town of Hartland is the latest to release a line-up of activities to celebrate this rare astronomical event.

On March 1, 2024, to kick off anticipation for the event, the Town will host a stargazing party at the Covered Bridge Golf & Country Club at 6:30 p.m.

New Brunswick astronomer Ted Dunphy will be offering a stargazing and eclipse presentation. Following the presentation, telescopes will be available for viewing. The event is free for everyone to attend.

On April 6, 2024, the Town will host a “Total Eclipse of the Hartland” dance at the Hartland Legion. The doors will open at 8 p.m. with local band Double D playing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There is a cover charge of $10 per person, with the proceeds going to support the Central Carleton Community Complex project.

On April 8, 2024, a free eclipse viewing party will be held at the Hartland Community School. From 2 to 5 p.m., a craft fair will be held in the gymnasium, while from 2:30 to 4:45 p.m., a live stream of the Eclipse Balloon Project will be streamed in the cafetorium.

There will also be ample space outdoors for guests to view the eclipse.

Special viewing glasses are available now for pick up at Dr. Walter Chestnut Public Library or the Hartland Town Hall, as well as other locations throughout the county.
