River Valley Film Circuit is set to close out its season with a screening of the acclaimed Canadian film Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband). The film, which is in Inuktitut with English subtitles, will be screened at Second Wind Music Centre in Florenceville-Bristol on Sunday, April 19, at 4 p.m.
Wrong Husband was directed by renowned Inuk filmmaker Zacharias Kunuk, who is best known for his 2001 film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. Wrong Husband played the festival circuit in 2025 garnering praise at the Berlin International Film Festival before going on to the Toronto International Film Festival and Atlantic International Film Festival.
The movie has been nominated for four 2026 Canadian Screen Awards including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Director (Kunuk), Performance in a Leading Role, Drama (Theresia Kappianaq), and Performance in a Supporting Role, Drama (Leah Panimera).
Wrong Husband is an Arctic fairy tale that is a mix of period drama, fantasy and science fiction, following a young Inuk couple who are separated as young adults after being promised to each other at birth. Spirit guides intervene as the couple goes through hardships as they attempt to find each other again.
Critics praised Wrong Husband for its arresting visuals and moving story. The Globe and Mail film critic Barry Hertz called the film an epic that feels “both ancient and fresh.”
“As ever, Kunuk delivers an engrossing photographic portrait of his homeland that is equally beautiful and intimidating,” said Hertz.
Far Out Magazine’s Monica Reid said the film takes on the best features of fairy tales, without coming across as overly childish.
“The young couple at the centre of the tale are engaging, struggles and sufferings endured are suspenseful and touching, the efforts to escape are imaginative and charming, and the outcome, as it must be in a fairy tale, is a nicely written happily ever after.”
