Public health hosts immunization clinic after public exposures
After the announcement of potential exposures to measles at the Fredericton International Airport and the Upper River Valley Hospital in mid-October, public health is hosting a two-day vaccination clinic in Centreville.
The clinic will be held at the Western Valley Multiplex at 698 Central St in Centreville on Friday, Nov. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 4, from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., and on Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Walk-in appointments will be available, but you can book your MRR vaccine online or by calling 1-833-437-1424.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through airborne transmission and close contact. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and the community from measles. Two doses of the MMR vaccine is almost 100 per cent effective at preventing measles infection.
Who can receive a vaccine:
– Adults born in 1970 or later who have not previously received two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine
– Children 6 to 11 months who are travelling outside of Canada
– Children and adolescents who have not received two doses of MMR vaccine after turning 12 months of age
Those who are unsure of their vaccination status or that of their children are urged to discuss this with their healthcare provider. If you suspect you may have been exposed to measles or are experiencing symptoms, call your primary care provider or Tele-Care 811 for further direction.
To mitigate the risk of transmission, please do not present to the emergency department if you suspect you may have measles and are experiencing non-urgent symptoms. Visit Measles in New Brunswick (gnb.ca) for more information on measles and immunization.
