Nackawic-Millville Council news: Safety concerns at intersection, new fire chief announced

Safety concern at the top of Landegger Drive and Route 105 in Nackawic

At the June 19 Public Works Committee meeting, the ‘potentially dangerous’ intersection of Route 105 and Landegger Drive was discussed.

Details of numerous close calls were shared, and it was noted that there is also no marked crosswalk on Route 105 from the mini-home park.

Councillor Robert Simpson said the site is “an accident waiting to happen” and mentioned that signage is needed.

CAO Kathryn Clark told councillors that it may be possible to close the corner entrance to the gas station by using curbing. She will also contact Irving to see if they have any ideas.

Drivers who are travelling along Route 105 sometimes cut across in front of other vehicles that are stopped at the top of Landegger Drive as they are about to enter onto Route 105. These people are entering the Irving parking lot when this happens, and cut across lanes.

New Fire Chief/EMO Director

Council welcomed Jason Smith, the new fire chief, to the meeting. His first day of work was July 7.

LinkedIn lists Smith as the former Deputy Chief of the District of Taylor, British Columbia, and a former instructor with FireWise Consulting. His online resume says he began his first-responder career in Pugwash as a paramedic. He later worked as a firefighter, rising through the ranks to Fire Captain and later Acting Platoon Chief in Barrie, Ontario, before moving to British Columbia.

Mayor Tim Fox said it will be great to have his experience to help guide them and the three fire stations in the newly formed community.

On June 24, Smith toured all three stations in Nackawic, Millville, and Dumfries and visited other areas in the community with CAO Kathryn Clark.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day

Council received a request from Vitalite, on behalf of the NB FASD Centre of Excellence, to proclaim Sept. 9 as FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) Awareness Day to raise awareness of FASD.

The Nackawic-Millville Rural Community Office will be lit up in red on that day, joining other landmarks across New Brunswick.

FASD is a lifelong neurological disability caused by prenatal alcohol exposure and affects over 1.6 million Canadians. It can cause numerous challenges, including learning difficulties, memory problems, attention issues, difficulties with emotional regulation, and problems with social skills development. Those affected require ongoing support in education, employment and healthcare.

Councillor Robert Simpson stated he’d like to do some research and learn more about FASD. He will also reach out to Nackawic Senior High to see if they observe this date in any way and will report back to the council.

The FASD Awareness Day first started in 1999 and is held on Sept. 9, or ‘9/9’ to emphasize the importance of going alcohol-free during the whole nine months of pregnancy. The theme this year is Everyone Plays a Part: Take Action! The campaign aims to shed light on this hidden disability and encourage action to address it.
