The weekend of Feb. 21 and 22 proved to be a banner weekend for Woodstock High School (WHS) Varsity Basketball teams. Both the WHS boys’ and girls’ teams captured the AA provincial banners in decisive victories.

The Varsity Girls played at 1 p.m. on Saturday against the Carleton North Stars, a county rival. WHS defeated the Stars 65-49 to defend their 2025 provincial title.

On the boy’s side, the Thunder took on the Salisbury Cougars. The Thunder lead the entire game; the boys come out on top, 87-58. This capped off the undefeated season against AA opponents.

Varsity Boys Coach Scott Jones told his team to approach the game as they had all other games throughout the season. He shared wisdom with the players.

“We are going to make mistakes,” he told the boys. “What we can’t do is react to those mistakes.”

The coach of the Varsity Girls, Lisa Schmidt, said she is proud of the way her team came together to finish the season strong.

“Good teams become great ones when they trust each other enough to surrender the me for the we,” she said.

The atmosphere at TD Station in Saint John was electric. Thunder fans brought the energy and packed the stands to support their teams. As a player, it was incredible to feed off the energy in the crowd. As always, my fellow players and I appreciated our fans for coming and cheering us on.

I can remember watching the WHS Varsity Boys team when they last won the provincial championship, back in 2020. I was only in Grade 5, but at the time. I remember dreaming of one day playing at TD Station for the WHS Thunder. It really means a lot to be a part of something like winning a provincial championship for your school. The weekend was incredible and something that I will never forget.
