Icy conditions after hours of freezing rain make highways dangerous
After 18 hours of rain, freezing rain, and wet snow, schools are closed in the region, and police are warning drivers to stay off the road. In a social media post shortly after 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, the RCMP advised drivers not to be on the roads in the Woodstock area.
“Due to weather and road conditions, travel is not recommended on Route 2 between Woodstock (km 180) and Long Creek (km 257), and on Route 95 between the Houlton border and Woodstock.”
Schools are closed in most of the province, with the exception of Anglophone South and Francophone schools in the Saint John area
Environment Canada’s forecast continues to call for freezing rain throughout central and southeastern New Brunswick, with freezing rain expected to transition to rain later this morning.
Environment Canada’s yellow alert notice said roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery. Property or tree damage due to the weight of ice is possible. Be aware of falling ice and branches
