Man on off-road vehicle sustains serious injury during head-on crash with police vehicle

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) confirmed it is investigating the circumstances of a crash between an RCMP vehicle and an all-terrain vehicle near Tobique Narrows in northwestern New Brunswick,

Tobique Narrows is a rural community approximately 8 kilometres north of Perth-Andover.

In a media release on July 11, SiRT said an adult male sustained serious leg injuries during the collision on July 3.

The release said the incident occurred in the late evening of July 3. It involved a head-on collision between a member of the Woodstock RCMP detachment and a man driving an ATV on a rural road in Tobique Narrows.

SiRT said emergency response crews transported the ATV driver to the hospital for treatment of a severe leg injury. The police officer suffered minor injuries.

“Due to the serious injury sustained by the male, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation,” the release explained.

The SiRT takes over investigations of all police matters involving death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence or other issues of public interest that arise during the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.

Investigations are directed and controlled by an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine whether charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
