Music historians consider Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony one of history’s most important pieces. They explain that it pushes expressiveness far beyond the classical symphonies of Haydn and Mozart.
However, the symphony confused 18th-century critics because it was starkly different from what they had heard from Haydn and Mozart.
Beethoven initially dedicated the symphony to Napoleon but recanted after Napoleon declared himself emperor.
