Perth-Andover man facing murder charge in Nova Scotia

A Perth-Andover man is facing a murder charge in Nova Scotia while also awaiting plea on charges in Woodstock.

Patrick James Denny, 29, of Perth-Andover, appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Nov. 19 to answer charges laid by RCMP. He told the court he is currently serving a federal prison sentence at Renous and was awaiting a court appearance by video for charges in Nova Scotia.

Denny returns to court in custody for plea in Woodstock on Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, being an occupant of a vehicle knowing it carried a gun, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and possession of a firearm without a licence, concerning an incident on Nov. 15, 2022, in Hartland.

On Oct. 21, Denny was charged by Halifax RCMP with second-degree murder and committing an indignity to human remains in connection with a homicide that occurred in East Preston, Nova Scotia, on Aug. 30, 2022.

The charges were laid in Dartmouth Provincial Court after police responded to a report of a suspicious van parked behind a strip mall in East Preston. Inside the vehicle, RCMP discovered the body of Barry Angus Studley of Middle Sackville. Denny and Studley were known to each other.

In May 2023, Denny was sentenced in Woodstock to a total of three and a half years in federal prison for his involvement in a police chase near Wotstak (Woodstock First Nation) that involved weapons and assaulting a police officer. Denny was on parole when he was arrested.

Sentencing for damaging ankle bracelet

Zachary Sarchfield, 30, of Wotstak (Woodstock First Nation), appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Nov. 19 and pleaded guilty to charges laid by RCMP. He returns to court in custody for sentencing on Dec. 31 at 9:30 a.m.

Sarchfield was charged with breaching his release order by violating electronic monitoring and committing mischief causing property damage to an ankle bracelet for an incident on Sept. 6 at Mainstream.

He was arrested on Nov. 4 and told the court on Tuesday he faces charges in Fredericton for possession of stolen property and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Sarchfield also has a trial set for June 30, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to other separate charges. He returns to court in custody on Dec. 3 at 1:30 p.m. for a revocation hearing as a result of being rearrested.

Sarchfield was charged with attempting to breach his release order in July, as well as two counts of unlawful confinement, assault, and possession of a weapon to commit an offence concerning another incident on Sept. 11, 2023, in Woodstock. He pleaded not guilty. He was also charged with failing to appear in court on Feb. 20 when an arrest warrant was issued.

Jacksonville man awaiting trial

Craig Laskey, 34, of Jacksonville, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 and pleaded not guilty to three charges laid by RCMP. His trial date was set for Sept. 24, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.

Laskey was charged with sexual assault for an incident on Aug. 14 and assault by choking and mischief on Aug. 21 at Bedell. He was released on an undertaking until his next court appearance. A monitoring date was also set for July 22, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. to confirm Laskey will be ready to proceed to trial.

Fined $2,600 for impaired driving

Jonathan Douglass, 33, of Wotsak (Woodstock First Nation), appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 and pleaded guilty to an impaired driving charge. He was fined $2,600 and was prohibited from driving for one year.

RCMP charged Douglass with an incident on Jan. 10 on Route 165 near Bulls Creek. He had no prior criminal record.

Sentencing delayed for Woodstock man

Shane Lee Dickison, 36, of Woodstock, appeared in provincial court in custody by video for sentencing on Nov. 19 after changing his plea to guilty on several charges laid by Woodstock Police and RCMP. His sentencing was adjourned until Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the request of his defence counsel.

Dickison pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon (a knife) involving another man and uttering threats for an incident on April 23 in Lower Woodstock. The crown withdrew another charge of breaching a peace bond.

RCMP also charged Dickison with breaching his curfew on June 5 at Dorrington Hill. He was also charged by Woodstock Police with assault with a weapon (a knife) involving another man, uttering threats, mischief causing property damage to a vehicle, and resisting arrest in connection with an incident on May 6 in Lower Woodstock.  He pleaded guilty on all counts.

Arrest warrant issued

The court issued an arrest warrant for Kyrin Moulton, 19, of Grand Falls, formerly of Neqotkuk, after he failed to appear in provincial court for sentencing on Nov. 19.

Moulton appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Oct. 24 for a bail hearing and was released with conditions.

RCMP charged him with assault involving a female victim, breach of probation and possession of stolen prescription medication stemming from an incident on Oct. 22 at Perth-Andover. He pleaded guilty on all three counts. The crown withdrew another charge of breach of probation.

As part of his release, Moulton was ordered to stay away from the Village of Perth-Andover.

Plea adjourned on several charges

Logan Estey, 20, of Woodstock, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 to answer multiple charges. The matter was adjourned for plea until Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. at the request of his defence counsel.

Estey was charged by RCMP with assault, assault with a weapon (a car), and dangerous driving following an incident on July 24 at Wotstak (Woodstock First Nation).

Woodstock Police charged him with two counts of breaching a no-contact order concerning an incident on Aug. 3 in Woodstock. He was ordered to have no further contact with the complainant. He appeared in provincial court in custody on Aug. 8 and was released with conditions.

He was also charged with mischief causing property damage to a window and possessing a firearm to commit an offence in connection with an incident on Jan. 1 in Upper Woodstock. The court heard Estey will also appear in court in Fredericton on Dec. 3 on other charges.

Returning for plea on trafficking charges

Justin Ryan Shea, 36, of Plymouth Road, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 to answer two drug trafficking charges. The matter was adjourned for plea until Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m.

Shea was charged by Woodstock Police with trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking in connection with incidents in Woodstock on June 30 and May 2.

Shea appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Nov. 7 for a bail hearing and was released with conditions. He was charged by Woodstock Police with break, enter and theft at a dwelling house on Creighton Street on Sept. 26 and an additional charge of breaching an undertaking (curfew).

Shea was also charged with mischief causing property damage and break, enter and theft at the East Coast Truck Wash for an incident on March 17 in Lower Woodstock.

Neqotkuk man to stand trial

Bennett Sacobie of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) will appear in provincial court on Oct. 2, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to several charges laid by RCMP.

Sacobie was charged with breach of an undertaking, uttering threats, assault, assault causing bodily harm, and unlawful confinement in connection with an incident on Aug. 14 at Neqotkuk. He pleaded not guilty at a court appearance on Nov. 5 and returned to court on Nov. 19 to set a date for his trial.

Charged with indictable assault

Travis Sappier of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 and pleaded not guilty to an indictable assault charge. His trial date was set for Sept. 25, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.

RCMP charged Sappier with aggravated assault by wounding another man in connection with an incident on May 19 at Neqotkuk. He was released on an undertaking until his next court appearance.

Juniper man to stand trial

John Eric Somerville, 36, of Juniper, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 for monitoring about his trial on five charges laid by RCMP. He confirmed he had secured legal counsel to proceed to trial.

During an earlier court appearance, Somerville pleaded not guilty and his trial date was set for June 25, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. He appeared in court in custody by video on May 27 and was released with conditions, including a curfew.

RCMP charged him with uttering threats, mischief causing property damage, and assault with a weapon (a hammer) involving a male victim on April 28 in Juniper.

He is also facing charges of breaching a no-contact order and uttering threats on May 26 at Juniper. He was arrested and jailed until his court appearance the next day.

Woodstock man awaits bail hearing

Curtis Brent Hatheway, 43, of Woodstock, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m. for a bail hearing. He appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Oct. 24 after being arrested on a warrant by Woodstock Police.

Hatheway also has a trial set for Dec. 5 at 9:30 a.m. He pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of breach of probation and two counts of breaching a peace bond between June 30 and July 8 and on Sept. 13 in Woodstock, breach of an undertaking, breach of probation, breach of a peace bond and criminal harassment between Sept. 14 and Sept. 16 in Woodstock. The charges relate to a no-contact order involving a female complainant.

Sentencing rescheduled on drug charge

Bronwyn Barbara Thomas, 23, of Bloomfield, will appear in provincial court for sentencing on Nov. 22 at 3:30 p.m. on a drug charge laid by RCMP.

Thomas was scheduled to appear in provincial court on Nov. 1 for a hearing about withdrawing her guilty plea on a drug charge. She did not appear with new counsel, and no application for a change of plea was made, so Judge Cameron Gunn reset her sentencing date.

RCMP charged Thomas with attempting to possess two kilograms of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking in connection with an incident on March 2, 2022, at a Canada Post Office near Centreville.

Thomas was expected to receive a two-year federal prison sentence when the proceedings came to a halt on Oct. 4. At that time, Thomas told Judge Cameron Gunn she wanted to withdraw her guilty plea and seek new legal counsel.

Canterbury man returning for plea

Issiah Tobi Gabriel, 22, of Canterbury, will appear in provincial court on Dec. 3 at 9:30 a.m. to answer a mischief charge laid by RCMP.

Gabriel was charged with mischief causing property damage to a vehicle in connection with an incident on May 20 at Canterbury. He appeared in court on Nov. 19 when the matter was adjourned to the new date at the request of his defence counsel.

The court heard a resolution was being sought with the crown to resolve the matter.

Moved to alternative measures

Whitney Leigh McGuire, 42, of Richmond Corner, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 to answer one charge laid by Woodstock Police. The matter was moved to the alternative measures program with the consent of the crown.

McGuire was charged with criminal harassment through repeated communication with another person between March 4 and March 20 near Woodstock. She has until Feb. 18, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. to complete the program’s requirements to have the charge withdrawn.

Bairdsville man charged

Aaron Hughes, 28, of Bairdsville, will appear in provincial court on Dec. 3 at 9:30 a.m. to answer a shoplifting charge.

RCMP charged Hughes with theft from a grocery store in Perth-Andover on June 25. He appeared in court on Nov. 19 when the matter was moved to the new date at the request of his defence counsel.

East Brighton man awaiting plea

Ozzie Jr. Trecartin, 30, of East Brighton, will appear in provincial court on Nov. 26 at 1:30 p.m. to answer three charges laid by RCMP.

He was charged with impaired driving and two counts of driving while suspended on July 21 in Peel. He was scheduled to enter a plea on Nov. 19, but the matter was adjourned at the request of his defence counsel.

Trecartin appeared in provincial court on Oct. 29 for plea on several other charges related to an alleged attempted murder in East Brighton. He pleaded not guilty and his trial dates were set for Oct. 16-17, 2025, and Oct. 20, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.

Trecartin appeared in provincial court in custody by video for a bail hearing on July 30 and was released from custody with conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring device attached to his ankle. He was ordered to have no firearms in his possession. He must also have no contact with the alleged victim.

RCMP charged Trecartin with attempted murder, reckless discharge of a firearm at a place while a person was inside, two counts of indictable assault against another man, uttering threats, resisting arrest, possession of a firearm without a licence, and storage of multiple guns in a careless manner following an incident on July 21 at East Brighton.

Charged with manufacturing firearms

Kevin Manuel Cedros, 42, of Aroostook Junction, will appear in provincial court on Dec. 10 at 9:30 a.m. to answer to 10 charges related to the manufacture of firearms using a 3D-printer. He was scheduled for plea on Nov. 19 when the matter was adjourned to the new date.

Cedros appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Sept. 5 for a bail hearing and was released with conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring device attached to his ankle.

Cedros was also placed under house arrest. He was ordered to reside in Aroostook Junction and follow a curfew. Police will be checking on him regularly, the judge said, and all 3D-printer software and supplies were to be surrendered to the authorities immediately.

RCMP arrested Cedros after police received a report on Aug. 15 about a person manufacturing and selling 3D-printed firearms at a residence on Route 130 in Aroostook. Search warrants were executed, and police uncovered 3D-printed guns, ammunition, numerous firearm parts, a 3D-printer, prohibited magazines and electronic devices.  

In federal prison awaiting plea

Ryan Eccleston, 32, of Plaster Rock, appeared in provincial court in custody by video from federal prison on Nov. 19 to answer two charges laid by RCMP.

Eccleston was charged with being at large on a release order and possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking. He returns to court in custody for plea on Dec. 10 at 11 a.m.

Eccleston was sentenced in 2021 to four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to 11 charges laid by RCMP.  He was paroled and then returned to jail on the new charges.

Arthurette man awaiting plea

Nicholas William Sutthery, 40, of Arthurette, appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Nov. 19 for plea on charges laid by RCMP. The matter was adjourned until Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at the request of his defence counsel.

Sutthery was denied bail on Oct. 3. He was charged by RCMP with three counts of uttering threats at Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) on Sept. 25, assault with a weapon (ramming a vehicle), dangerous driving, break and enter at a dwelling house, and possession of a stolen ATV on May 27 in Perth Andover, and breach of an undertaking on July 16.

During an earlier court appearance, Sutthery was charged with possessing a stolen truck in connection with an incident between Jan. 1 and 11 at Carlingford.  He had a dated prior criminal record.

Two charged in Perth-Andover incident

Dana Newell, 38, of Perth-Andover, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 to answer several charges laid by RCMP.  The matter was adjourned for plea until Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the request of his defence counsel.

Newell was charged with possession of a prohibited firearm (a sawed-off shotgun), careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a licence, possession of a stolen ATV, and possession of a stolen BB gun, concerning an incident on May 27 in Perth-Andover.

Michael McKee, 18, of Woodstock, was charged with possession of a prohibited firearm (a sawed-off shotgun) stemming from the same incident in Perth-Andover. He appeared in court on Nov. 19, when the matter was adjourned for a plea until Dec. 6 at 9:30 a.m.

Bath man to stand trial

Michael James Watson, 30, of Bath, appeared in provincial court on Nov. 19 for monitoring about his trial. He returns to court on Feb. 18, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. to confirm he will be ready to proceed to trial.

RCMP charged Watson with assault with a weapon (a shovel), mischief causing property damage to a vehicle, dangerous driving and driving while suspended concerning an incident on Nov. 5, 2023, in Bath. He pleaded not guilty, and his trial date was set for May 14, 2025, at 9:30 a.m.

Neqotkuk man awaiting plea

Jason Moulton of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) will appear in provincial court on Dec. 3 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on two charges laid by RCMP.

Moulton was charged with sexual assault and assault by choking in relation to an incident on Oct. 22, 2023, at Neqotkuk. He made his first court appearance on Nov. 19 when the matter was adjourned to the new date at the request of his defence counsel.

Sentencing set on fraud charge

Muwin Mus-Hun of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) appeared in provincial court in custody on Nov. 18 after being arrested on a warrant for failing to appear.

She pleaded guilty to a fraud charge laid by RCMP and was released with conditions until her sentencing on Feb. 25, 2025, at 1:30 p.m.

The court heard the accused deposited a $326 cheque into her bank account that did not belong to her. The single incident was related to a series of stolen cheques circulating in the community. The cheques totalling $67,000 belonged to the band office but were cashed illegally by several individuals.
