Serious Incident Response Team investigating

An alleged altercation between a local woman and a member of the Western Valley Region RCMP is under investigation.

Western District RCMP Sgt. Dan Sharpe said the incident occurred on the evening of June 13 at Richmond Corner and was immediately referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT). This team is responsible for conducting independent investigations for matters arising from the actions of a police officer in New Brunswick.

Several photos and messages about the incident were circulating on social media, alleging an Indigenous woman had been assaulted by a police officer and suffered facial injuries and bruises.

Sgt. Sharpe said police responded to a call for service, and when members attended, the situation escalated quickly, resulting in a woman being treated by medics at the scene. The incident is under investigation, and charges may be pending.

When asked if any of the attending officers were wearing body cameras, Sgt. Sharpe said they weren’t but said there were witnesses.

An official statement will also be issued by SIRT regarding the police officer.
