Response comes after an altercation in Richmond Corner

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has issued an official statement about an altercation between a local woman and a member of the Western Valley Regional RCMP on June 13 at Richmond Corner.

The SIRT statement says the RCMP responded to a call about a family disturbance and subsequently arrested the suspect.

“During the arrest, a woman intervened, and an altercation ensued between police and the female. The woman was placed under arrest and during this process she was struck in the face. She was brought to hospital by the RCMP, where she was assessed and was released from the hospital.”

SIRT is responsible for conducting independent investigations of matters arising from the actions of a police officer in New Brunswick. SIRT also has the authority to determine if charges should be laid against the officer.

Several photos and messages about the incident were circulating on social media, alleging an Indigenous woman had been assaulted by a police officer and suffered facial injuries and bruises.

The domestic disturbance at Richmond Corner is also under investigation, and charges may be pending. Police were not wearing body cameras during the incident, but witnesses were at the scene.
