No layoffs for New Brunswick operations, but ‘some changes will be felt locally’

McCain Foods has confirmed it’s going through a company restructuring that officials say could be felt “locally.”

Rumours about possible layoffs began circulating in the Upper River Valley at the end of September.

“McCain has always evolved to meet the needs of our customers and adapt to global market dynamics,” said Vice President, Global and External Affairs & Sustainability, Charlie Angelakos, in an email to the River Valley Sun.

“To support our future growth, we recently completed a review of our organization and are exploring two key changes: launching a new business unit called Global Snacking and bringing together our Great Britain, Ireland, and Europe, Middle East, and North Africa regions into a single, streamlined supply chain. These changes are designed to reduce complexity, speed up decision-making, and position McCain strongly for the future.”

When asked about layoffs, Angelakos said that while there are some workforce impacts, they do not affect New Brunswick plants, supply chains, or customers.

“Our commitment to New Brunswick remains strong. Florenceville continues to be the heart of McCain Foods, and we are making significant, long-term investments in the community and our campus — from the expansion of the Potato Processing Technology Centre, to the development of an on-site family medical clinic, to airport upgrades, and the planned renovation of our main complex. These projects are designed to strengthen our presence and ensure Florenceville continues to play a central role in McCain’s future,” said Angelakos.

No timeline for the restructuring was released.
