Annual fundraiser helps local individuals and families year-round
One of the most recognizable signs of the season, the Salvation Army Kettle, returns to local stores again this year, aiming to raise $70,000.
On Thursday, Nov. 23, Woodstock Salvation Army Majors Angel and Marlene Sadoval, Woodstock Mayor Trina Jones and town councillor Jeff Bradbury, with help from Woodstock Atlantic Superstore manager Joe Goodine, officially kicked off the 2025 campaign.
“We know it is difficult for many,” said Major Angel Sadoval, pointing to the difficult economic conditions many are facing. “We believe in the good hearts of the people in our community. and if they support, we will see the less fortunate to have things they require in hard times.”
Sadoval said they are in desperate need of volunteers.
“This year has been more difficult, but we believe that once people start feeling the spirit of Christmas, they’re going to come out.”
On hand for the kickoff was Woodstock Mayor Trina Jones, who has a personal tradition with the kettle campaign.
“For the last few years, I’ve tried to help by personally matching up to $1,000 in donations on the first day,” she told the River Valley Sun. “People tend to trust and recognize, trust, and support this organization. This money is going to a good place; it stays local, which is really important to us (the town).”
For years, the town’s mayor has helped kick off the annual campaign. Councillors will join Jones at the kettle for a few hours throughout the day.
Woodstock Councillor Jeff Bradbury is a yearly kettle campaign volunteer and has been a member of the Salvation Army for decades. He has seen the good the organization has done.
“The work that they do is important,” said Bradbury. “The money stays here. The people they reach and help is amazing. As we all know, everyone is going through hard times, so this work is important.”
Aside from Mayor Jones personally matching donations up to $1,000 on opening day, Thursday, Nov. 20, the Y’s Men Club will match donations up to $1,000 on Nov. 22, and Scotiabank will match donations up to $3,000 on Dec. 6.
