High speeds, big crowds expected for Maritime Snowmobile Championship Racing

MSCR starts Friday, Feb. 20, under the lights, and continues Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m.

The Maritime Snowmobile Championship Racing will begin with a roar this weekend.

The races start up Friday under the lights, as the MSCR committee and volunteers get to see all their hard work and long hours pay off this weekend.

MSCR Secretary/Treasurer Twyla Rogers says they have over 150 volunteers helping this year.

Over the past week, the team’s focus has been on the site, running around to set up the Antique Snowmobile Show tent, prepare under the grandstand, and place hay bales around the track for safety.

Rogers says nearly 100 racers are coming from all over Canada and the U.S.

The MSCR has added a new addition to Friday night, the Fastest Speed Competition. Racers can sign up to have their sleds timed with a radar gun, and prizes will be awarded to the sled with the highest speed.

The volunteers and committee members aren’t the only ones working hard. The Aurora Productions team, the film crew behind the event’s popular live streams, was reportedly set up on Wednesday.

The MSCR is working with Red Bull this year, and they will set up an entrance arch and hand out free products to spectators.

Rogers says most of the hotels in the area are “pretty much filled,” meaning the weekend will be packed with fans and racers.

The weather is looking better for the races this year. Last year, the event had to be cut short because of a snowstorm; however, this weekend is on tap to be full of sunshine, with average temperatures around  -4 C.
