Kari Carrier honoured for inclusion work

An early childhood educator who works at Nackawic Childcare Inc. has been recognized for her work in inclusion.

Kari Carrier was among 16 early childhood educators in the Anglophone sector to be awarded one of the Minister’s Excellence in Early Learning and Child Care Awards.

Carrier won the Excellence in Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging Award. Other categories included Excellence in relationship-based and responsive environments, Excellence in innovation and leadership and Excellence in reflective practice and professional learning.

Carrier has been working at Nackawic Childcare for almost eight years. She said she chose this profession after growing up in a large family.

“Growing up with seven siblings was wild, and now I get to be a kid again at heart through the children I work with,” said Carrier.

She said being able to bring love, care, and safety into her classroom is truly a privilege.

“I strive every day to be the best version of myself so I can help children learn, grow, and thrive in a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment.”

She said the award means a lot to her and she feels very proud and honoured to have received it.

“It fills me with happiness and gratitude to be recognized for doing work that I truly love. It celebrates my passion for creating a joyful, inclusive space where every child feels valued, supported, and excited to learn.”

Carrier said that as an educator, she encourages inclusion by making sure every child feels seen, valued, and like they belong.

“I focus on kindness, respect, and helping children build friendships where everyone is included and cared for,” she said.

Carrier also pointed out that being a marathon runner has taught her mental strength, resilience, and determination.

“It has shown me the importance of setting goals, staying committed, and pushing through challenges. These qualities are ones I bring into my work with children every day.”

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development congratulated Carrier and other award winners through a news release.

“Congratulations to all the recipients of the Excellence in Early Learning and Child Care Awards,” wrote Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Claire Johnson. “You are part of a critical stage in children’s development – where identity, relationships and a love of learning first take shape, and we recognize that this profession deserves recognition in its own. Today, we celebrate your impact, your commitment and the difference you make every day in the lives of children and families across our communities.”
