A 10th‑anniversary passport program encourages New Brunswickers to explore markets and support local producers
In a July 27 press release, the National Farmers Union in New Brunswick (NFU-NB) said it is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Map of NB Farmers’ Markets this year with a market passport and contest.
The map was created in 2016 to promote the growth of farm markets and farm stands as key components of agriculture and economic development.
“Celebrating this 10th anniversary is a huge achievement in both the promotion of the farmers’ markets, which are small business incubators, but also a great access point for direct sales for our farmers,” said Suzanna Fournier, Executive Director of NFU-NB.
The map has been updated, printed and distributed every two years since then. Through the oversight and collection of the map, the NFU-NB has become a liaison for farmers’ markets in the province, sitting on the Canadian Farmers’ Market coalition, and in 2025 hosted the province’s first farmers’ market conference.
To celebrate this 10th anniversary edition of the map, they have created an NB Map of Farmers’ Markets Passport and contest. Between Aug. 1, 2026, and Oct. 31, 2026, anyone aged 10 and over can get a passport from their farmers’ market, the NFU-NB, or the NB Food and Beverages team, and collect 10 unique stickers from any of the 44 NB farmers’ markets to fill their passport and enter to win one of 13 prizes of local food and beverage products.
Details about which markets are listed in each region can be found on the 2026 updated NB Map of Farmers’ Markets, available at every farmers’ market, visitor information centre, and public library, or online at nfunb.org.
The NFU-NB will be travelling to 35 markets from Aug. 1, 2026 to Oct. 31, to meet local vendors, shoppers, and local food supporters of all ages to promote the passport, Map of Farmers’ Markets and the New Brunswick agricultural sector; and to hand out its own unique passport sticker. Full dates and locations are listed at nfunb.org/events/.
Fournier says the markets they’ve visited have left an impression on her with how much local support the vendors get.
“These are really community organizations, and many do get tourists and other visitors, and of course that’s what we’re trying to encourage with the passport promotion, but they do really have their community support, and that’s so great to see,” said Fournier.
“It’s reinforced to me how unique each market is. They’re all so different in their own way.”
The NFU-NB will also have a limited number of free NFU cloth bags at each market, first come, first served. The NB Food and Beverages team will also have a unique sticker to hand out at the markets and events they attend.
The NFU-NB thanks the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Fisheries, and the NB Food and Beverages Program for their ongoing support of this project.
The National Farmers Union in New Brunswick is an accredited general farm organization in the province. Our members believe that small and medium-sized family farms should remain the primary food-producing units in Canada. As a democratic, membership-driven organization, we promote policies brought forth by our members that support family farms. We work to create spaces for farmers to come together to learn and network.
This week, the NFUNB will be at the Peticodiac market, the Newcastle market, the Tracadie market, and possibly the Shippagan market.
