‘Rainbarrel Fundraiser’ by Woodsock Golf and Curling Club focuses on positive environmental impact
The Woodstock Golf and Curling Club is hosting a fundraiser to purchase rain barrels to support the community’s gardening.
The club is partnering with RainBarrel.ca to integrate barrels in the area, with the hopes of reducing strain on municipal water systems, encouraging sustainable gardening, and helping residents adapt to hotter, drier summers.
“We all recognize that our summers are getting hotter and drier over the most part, so it would be nice if we could, you know, collect some of the rainwater when it does come and use it for those things on the outside of our house,” said Woodstock Golf and Curling Club Curling Committee member, Loree Kaye.
Their goal is to sell at least 150 barrels, aiming to raise $1,500.
The rain barrels are lightweight, made from 100 per cent recycled materials, and available in multiple models. The basic black is $70. There is an upgraded version for more, which comes in a variety of colours and with attachments for multi-barrel setups. The “Ugly Duckling” models are fully functional, cosmetically damaged barrels sold at a discounted price.
The club came across the RainBarrel Fundraiser while looking for a community-focused fundraiser.
“They work with many organizations, like nonprofits across the country and into the U.S., too. This one sort of sparked our interest because it not only is a fundraiser for us and something that’s of benefit to the community, it also is of benefit to the environment,” said Kaye.
Kaye believes the barrels will make a great addition to the community because they will both improve the area’s environment and involve people in the process.
“Where we got started, hoping that we could engage the community at large in sort of that aspect of our fundraiser, that it’s not only good for them and their plants, it’s good for the environment,” said Kaye.
The barrels are available for purchase on RainBarrel.ca until July 8. Pickup day is July 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Woodstock Golf and Curling Club. Cash or debit is accepted on pickup day, or you can pre-pay online.
A sample barrel is set up at the Woodstock Golf and Curling Club for anyone interested in viewing the product before making a purchase.
