Union says entire workforce to be laid off as mill ‘temporarily’ idles
In a social media post that some employees are now sharing online, the union representing workers at AV Nackawic confirmed that all staff at the mill in Nackawic-Millville will be laid off as of Nov. 4.
“Many people have already heard, so while I would prefer to speak to everyone in person, that won’t be possible before news spreads,” reads a post from Unifor Local 219 to employees that was shared with the River Valley Sun.
“The company informed us this morning that the mill will be “temporarily idling” the mill as of November 4th and all members will be laid off.”
AV Nackawic directly employs approximately 400 people. The operation and related spin-off jobs represent close to 50 percent of the tax base for the rural community of Nackawic-Millville.
The post added that the mill’s Human Resources department will prepare and issue layoff notices in the coming days.
The union also said it would work with the national and provincial governments on “EI issues” and would continue to look for potential buyers for the mill.
“We will continue to support our members through this difficult period.”
The union plans to have an emergency meeting for employees at its union hall on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and will continue to update employees as needed.
On Aug. 7, the York-Sunbury-Charlotte Forest Marketing Board said the mill had notified it that the operation would not accept any wood products “until further notice.”
AV Nackawic was named one of Atlantic Canada’s top employers in 2026 by Mediacorp Canada Inc. as part of the national Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.
