Full slate for Nackawic-Millville Sept. 8 Council meeting
Resident has safety concerns for Smythe Lane/Trenholm Street subdivision
Council reviewed an email from a concerned resident regarding road drainage, school bus, and public safety concerns along the Smythe Lane and Trenholm Street subdivision in Nackawic.
The resident said concerns include severely overgrown roadside drainage areas; the condition and quality of recent asphalt repairs; deteriorating road conditions; safe areas for children waiting for school transportation; and a significant embankment toward water without any apparent guardrail or other roadside protection. It was requested that the Public Works Department inspect this area.
The resident said they understand that municipalities must prioritize limited resources. Still, residents have a reasonable expectation that municipal infrastructure will be maintained appropriately and that identified public-safety concerns involving children and motorists will be assessed.
The letter asked when the requested inspections and safety assessments will be done, what corrective actions will be proposed, and also a timeline for the actions. Council agreed to refer the email to the Public Works Department.
Tender awarded for Route 104 work
Council awarded the tender for milling and paving on Route 104 to Perfection Paving Ltd. for $397,300, excluding HST. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure is funding the project with remaining funds from the Route 105 Left Turning Lanes project.
Fire halls signage
Council reviewed a memo from CAO Kathryn Clark, who sought direction on signage and lettering for the recently completed Dumfries Fire/Community Hall building.
Clark said Deputy Chief Liston, from Millville, contacted her regarding the outdated name and lettering on the building in Millville. He asked for a decision on the name.
Clark suggested that, since they are amalgamating the three departments into one, the lettering on each fire station be updated to: Dumfries Fire Station, Nackawic Fire Station, and Millville Fire Station.
Clark is currently waiting for a quote on some new lettering. Some of the existing lettering can be reused if removed properly.
A motion was made by Councillor Graham and seconded by Deputy Mayor MacFarlane to accept the recommendation. The motion was passed.
Meeting set for ongoing ATV issues
CAO Kathryn Clark reported that a meeting is scheduled for Sept. 15 with the RCMP, Quad NB, and Off-Road Enforcement to discuss the ongoing ATV issues. She mentioned that new, larger signs have been posted at the top and bottom of Landegger Drive.
Waiting for approval for dumpsters to be relocated from Davidson Lake
Council reviewed minutes from the Aug. 24 Public Works Committee meeting. The committee discussed the Davidson Lake Garbage Collection dumpsters.
The garbage bins will be moved to the Dumfries Fire Station after the old building is demolished, once the Davidson Lake Association approves. Councillor d’Entremont said they determined this is a good location with security cameras.
Mayor gives shout-out to summer students
Mayor Tim Fox said he’s heard many positive comments about the summer students.
“They are a phenomenal group of students. I’ve received lots of good feedback and we are pretty fortunate to have them,” said Fox.
