Woodstock police say the 35-year-old abandoned his car on Grafton Hill and evaded police on foot

The Woodstock Police Force continues to search for a 35-year-old who evaded police Monday afternoon, July 14, after fleeing from patrol officers in Woodstock.

Deputy Chief Mark Bennett explained an officer on patrol Monday afternoon recognized the man behind the wheel of a vehicle as someone with a suspended licence.

He said the man also cut off his monitoring bracelet.

On Monday, the Woodstock Police Force issued a media release explaining that members of the Woodstock Police Force and the Western Valley Region RCMP were combing the Grafton Hills area in search of a man who fled an attempted police stop in Woodstock.

“The driver refused to pull over and fled from the police at a high rate of speed,” the police explained in the statement. “Officers were able to identify the 35-year-old driver, who later abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.”

The Woodstock Police Force, in conjunction with the RCMP, began searching the Birchwood Drive area of Grafton Hill, utilizing the RCMP K-9 unit and drones.

Birchwood Drive is part of an expansive residential subdivision built along Grafton Hill, immediately across the St. John River from Woodstock. The street comes to a dead end, surrounded by a wooded area near the top of the hill.

“There is no risk to the public; however, police are requesting that members of the public stay out of the area while police operations are underway,” the police said in its news release.

Bennett said police searched the Grafton area for approximately two hours without success.

He said police, as per its protocol, do not release the suspect’s name until he is charged in court.

Bennett asked anyone with information about this or any other crime to contact the Woodstock Police Force at 506-325-4601, Crime Stoppers at 1-866-222-TIPS, or Crime Stoppers online at www.crimenb.ca.
