Fire at Full Moon Tavern remains under investigation

In a media release issued on Tuesday, Aug. 5, businessman Scott Dunlop thanked firefighters for saving his business.

At 10:36 a.m. on Sunday morning, Aug. 3, the Woodstock Fire Department was called to the Full Moon Tavern in the Home Zone Electronics’ building complex at 365 Connell Street, which Dunlop owns.

“The fire was quickly contained to a small location within the front serving area in Full Moon,” Dunlop noted in the release. “Damage was minimal due to the fast and professional actions of the Woodstock Fire Department. Not only was the fire quickly contained, but the smoke was also dealt with for Home Zone Electronics and our other neighbour, the Great Canadian Dollar Store.”

Home Zone Electronics and the Great Canadian Dollar Store were able to open on Tuesday after minimal cleanup to deal with the ‘slight odour.’

Dunlop said hearing his building was on fire was hard.

“Well, after being in the same business for 30 years, it’s what you know and love,” he said when reached by the River Valley Sun. “So, it was total shock and wanting to immediately get there to help in any way I could.”

Shortly after the call, the Woodstock Fire Department requested the Hartland Fire Department’s ladder truck as a precaution.

Woodstock Fire Chief Harold McLellan said firefighters quickly put the fire out, then cut a small hole in the roof to ensure the fire hadn’t spread to the attic area. Industrial ‘positive-pressure’ fans were then used to remove smoke from the building.

“There is significant smoke damage,” said Chief McLellan, noting proper fire breaks within the building’s structure helped contain the damage.

Officials with the Fire Marshal’s office were on scene most of Sunday.

Dunlop has nothing but praise for the firefighters who responded to the call.

“On behalf of all our families that work every day at 365 Connell Street, we would like to thank the Woodstock Fire Department and the Hartland Fire Department for responding with mutual aid on Sunday,” said Dunlop in the news release.

Dunlop credits firefighters’ “incredible actions” for minimizing the impact, noting that Home Zone Electronics and the Great Canadian Dollar Store were opened on Tuesday because of the swift response of fire departments.

Home Zone Electronics celebrated 30 years in business on Aug. 1.

The fire remains under investigation.
