Service clubs to host Feb. 21 breakfast for Southern Victoria Cancer Assistance Fund

Rotary Club of Perth-Andover and Perth Elks Lodge members are hoping hungry patrons will enjoy a hearty breakfast and a chance to help patients coping with cancer treatments.

The two service organizations announced that a special benefit to support the Southern Victoria Cancer Relief Fund will be held at the Perth Elks Lodge on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8 to 11 a.m. The Rotary Club and Elks Lodge will split food expenses, with all proceeds from the $ 12-per-plate charge going to the cancer fund. Children under 12 eat for $8, while children under 6 eat for free.

“The Southern Victoria Cancer Assistance Fund provides money to patients undergoing cancer treatment for travel and other expenses. Many people from our region are travelling to Saint John for treatment. Our organization supports local people and helps them with travel and other expenses,” said Janet Gee, fund secretary.

Gee, who is also co-director of the membership committee with the Perth Elks Lodge, said Elks members recognize the need to help patients and families coping with a cancer diagnosis.

“The Elks is all about community. Our whole thrust is to support our neighbours. When we raise more money, we can give more money out. We love to work together to help make our community a better place.”

Rotarian Angela Leonard said Perth-Andover Rotarians are eager to help support local families coping with a serious disease.

“Cancer touches so many people in our community. The Southern Victoria Cancer Assistance Funds provide a crucial role in helping people pay for travel and other costs accessing treatment,” Leonard said. “We hope the benefit will provide a healthy start to this important cause for 2026.”

The cancer fund used to rely on donations from local funeral homes, but as more people opt for less formal funeral arrangements, memorial fund donations collected during funeral visitations have declined.

“It’s a great way to see your friends, enjoy a hearty meal and help your community,” Gee said.

The breakfast menu includes bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, pancakes, baked beans, juice, tea and coffee.

Leonard welcomed the chance to work with Elks volunteers to support a great cause.

“The Rotary motto is ‘Service Above Self’, and working alongside our great Elks partners will build goodwill and better friendships while benefitting everyone – a great example of Rotary’s 4-way test,” she said.

Tickets for the event will be sold at the door.
