Employment Standards Branch must approve any exemptions
In a news release issued Friday, June 5, the provincial government reminded those employing or about to employ young people this summer that they have to follow specific rules. students.
“Restrictions for those under the age of 16 are in place to ensure their safety and well-being in the workplace. These restrictions relate to how many hours children may work, as well as when and where they can work,” noted the news release.
Provisions under the New Brunswick Employment Standards Act limit any child under 16 to six hours of work per day. While school remains in session, they may not work more than three hours on any school day or spend more than eight hours in the same day attending school and working.
Children under 16 are also prohibited from working overnight, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Those under 14 are not permitted to work in the following industries:
· forestry
· construction
· an industrial undertaking
· automotive service
· hospitality (hotel or restaurant)
· theatre or dance hall
“In some cases, the act allows children under 16 to work outside these rules only when the job is deemed safe and the child’s guardian agrees,” the release noted.
Any employer seeking an exemption from the rules must obtain a permit and apply for authorization from the employment standards branch.
