Bail decision reserved on weapons, assault charges

Aaron William Rowan, 47, of Bulls Creek, appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Oct. 3 for a bail hearing on nine new charges laid by RCMP.

Associate Chief Judge Brian C. McLean reserved his decision on bail until Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Rowan was charged with possession of a firearm (a handgun) while prohibited, uttering threats, intimidation to obstruct the course of justice, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, possession of stolen property, and committing mischief, concerning an incident involving a female victim on Sept. 23 at Bulls Creek.

He appeared in court in custody on Sept. 26 and was remanded for a bail hearing. On Oct. 3, Rowan also faced a separate charge of assaulting another female victim on July 11 at Woodstock First Nation.

Rowan appeared in provincial court in custody in February for a bail hearing. He was released with conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring device attached to his ankle, but was recently taken back into custody.

Woodstock Police charged him with assault causing bodily harm to another man, assault with a weapon (a metal pipe), and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace. Police arrested Rowan following an incident on Jan. 10 at Capital Square in downtown Woodstock when a man suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. He pleaded not guilty, and the court set a trial date for Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Rowan has a lengthy prior criminal record. He was also charged by Woodstock Police with possession of stolen property over $5,000 (a tractor owned by Green Diamond Equipment), stemming from an incident on Dec. 17, 2021, in Woodstock.

Jacksontown man in custody for bail hearing

Brian Thomas Ketch, 42, of Jacksontown, will appear in provincial court in custody on Oct. 4 at 1:30 p.m. for a bail hearing on new charges laid by RCMP.

Police arrested Ketch and charged him with assault and breaching an undertaking in connection with a recent incident near Woodstock.

He will also appear for trial in provincial court on Feb. 28, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty in May to two other charges laid by RCMP.

Ketch appeared in provincial court in custody on March 31 and was released with conditions. RCMP charged him with assault involving a female victim and breach of an undertaking by failing to abide by a no-contact order following incidents on March 11 and 28 in Jacksontown.

In custody awaiting sentencing

Silas Robert Burtt, 22, of Hartland, will appear in provincial court in custody for sentencing on Oct. 31 at 1:30 p.m. He appeared in custody on Sept. 29 and changed his plea to guilty to all but one charge laid by RCMP.

By video, Burtt appeared in provincial court in custody on Aug. 22 and waived his bail. He was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, breach of probation, and committing mischief causing property damage to a truck for an incident on Aug. 5 at Wilmot.

He was also charged with possession of a stolen ATV and breach of probation on Aug. 9 at Greenfield and possession of a stolen vehicle and breach of probation for an incident on July 9 at East Brighton.

On Sept. 29, Burtt pleaded guilty to all charges, excluding the mischief charge.

Burtt appeared in provincial court in custody on July 10 for a bail hearing.

He was released with conditions, including wearing an electronic monitoring device attached to his ankle. He was taken back into custody on Aug. 18 and remanded.

Remanded for sentencing

Marshall Turner, 22, of Beaconsfield, will appear in provincial court in custody by video for sentencing on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m. after pleading guilty to three charges laid by RCMP.

RCMP charged Turner with committing mischief, dangerous driving and breach of probation concerning an incident on Aug. 26 at Beaconsfield.

He was arrested and held in custody for a bail hearing but pleaded guilty on Sept. 1.

Back in custody on new charges

Curtis Brent Hatheway, 43, of Woodstock, appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Oct. 3 to answer new charges laid by Woodstock Police. He was remanded to jail to await his bail hearing on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Hatheway was charged with assaulting a female victim, assault by choking, uttering threats and breach of a release order for an incident on Sept. 25 in Woodstock.

He is also awaiting plea on other charges laid by Woodstock Police. Those matters were adjourned until Oct. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the request of his defence counsel.

Hatheway appeared in provincial court in custody by video on July 6 for a bail hearing. He was released with conditions, including house arrest and wearing an electronic monitoring device attached to his ankle.

Hatheway was also ordered to have no contact with the complainant and to attend court as required. Woodstock Police charged him with assault involving a female victim, breach of probation, and breach of a release order from an incident on June 22 in Woodstock.

On June 6, Hatheway was arrested on a warrant and released with conditions. Woodstock Police charged him with assault with a weapon (a shovel), assault involving a female victim, breach of a release order, and breach of probation following another incident on May 9 in Woodstock.

New trial date on seven charges

Zachary Benjamin Ivey, 24, of Dead Creek, will appear for trial in provincial court on Nov. 20 at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to seven charges laid by RCMP.

Ivey appeared in court on Oct. 3 for monitoring to confirm he had secured new legal counsel for his trial. Defence Counsel Alex Carleton told the court he would be representing the accused. Associate Chief Judge Brian C. McLean then set a new trial date.

On Sept. 14, Defence Counsel Lindsay Paul withdrew from the case, telling the court she could not contact her client for months to prepare for his trial.

Ivey was also scheduled for trial on Aug. 25, 2022, but it did not proceed since the defence had not received disclosure on his file.

Ivey was charged with uttering threats at Pole Hill on Feb. 15, 2021; pointing a firearm at another person, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, possession of a firearm without a licence, careless use of a firearm, assault with a weapon, and uttering threats in relation to another incident on Dec. 28, 2020, at Pole Hill. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Jan. 26, 2022.

Trial set for Killoween man

Trevor Crain, 49, of Killoween, will appear for trial in provincial court on July 11, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to a series of charges laid by RCMP.

He appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Sept. 14 for a bail hearing and was released with conditions. He returned to court on Oct. 3 for plea.

Crain was arrested on a warrant on Sept. 12. He appeared in provincial court in custody by video on June 21 for a bail hearing. He was released with conditions until his next court appearance on July 11 but failed to appear, and a warrant was issued.

RCMP charged Crain with breaking and entering a dwelling house, breaching an undertaking on June 15 at Moose Mountain, and committing an assault involving a female victim on June 11 at Killoween.

The court ordered Crain to follow a curfew and report to the police weekly as part of his release order. He must also have no contact with the complainant.

Arrested and held on warrant

John Howard Carmichael, 65, of Centreville, appeared in provincial court in custody on Oct. 3 after being arrested on a warrant of committal. He pleaded not guilty to new charges laid by RCMP. The court set a trial date for July 12, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

Carmichael was charged with possession of a firearm without a licence, transporting a firearm in a careless manner, and impaired driving concerning an incident on July 7 at Woodstock First Nation. A monitoring date for his trial was also set for Jan. 30, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

The court heard sheriffs took him into custody for non-payment of a fine.

Held for bail hearing

Mitchell LaFrance of Perth appeared in provincial court in custody on Oct. 3 and was remanded to jail. He returns to court in custody for a bail hearing on Oct. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

RCMP charged LaFrance with breaching an undertaking by failing to comply with a no-contact order in connection with an incident involving a female victim on Oct. 2 at East Brighton. The court heard more charges may be pending against the accused.

Arrested on multiple charges

Ryan James Smith of Woodstock, formerly of Perth, will appear in provincial court in custody for a bail hearing on Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. He appeared in court in custody by video on Oct. 3 when the hearing was adjourned to the new date.

The RCMP charged Smith with possession of a firearm while prohibited, possession of a stolen vehicle, being an occupant of a vehicle knowing it carried a firearm, obstructing police, transporting a firearm in a careless manner, and possession of a firearm without a licence, stemming from an incident on Sept. 30 in Hartland. He was also charged with possession of a stolen car, committing mischief and driving while suspended for another incident in Meductic.

Warrant being held on file

A warrant is being held on file for Lacy McClendon of Florenceville-Bristol. She appeared in provincial court in custody on Sept. 29 and was released with conditions.

Woodstock Police charged McClendon with breach of an undertaking concerning an incident on Sept. 28. She returned to court on Oct. 3 but received the wrong instructions about her file and left the courthouse.

The warrant will be held until her next court appearance.

Canterbury man facing four charges

Mitchell Lee Dow, 29, of Canterbury, appeared in provincial court on Oct. 3 and pleaded not guilty to four charges laid by RCMP. The court set a trial date for May 10, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.

Dow appeared in court in custody on Sept. 11 and was released with conditions. He was charged with assault involving a female victim, failing to stop for police, refusing a breathalyzer demand, and breach of an undertaking by failing to comply with a no-contact order in connection with incidents on Sept. 9 in Debec, Woodstock, and North Lake.

Released on undertaking until trial

Nicholas George Olmstead, 38, Canterbury, will appear for trial in provincial court on April 5, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to three charges laid by Woodstock Police.

Olmstead was charged with assault involving a female victim, assault by choking and uttering threats following an incident on Sept. 5 in Woodstock. He entered his not-guilty plea on Oct. 3 and was released on an undertaking until his trial.

Arrested on charges in Edmundston

Marc Morin, 24, of Aroostook, appeared in provincial court in custody on Oct. 3 to enter his plea after being arrested on a warrant. He was transferred to Edmundston by sheriffs to answer other charges following his court appearance in Woodstock.

RCMP charged Morin with possessing a stolen snowmobile and obstructing a police officer in connection with an incident on March 6 in Carlingford. He pleaded not guilty, and a trial date was set for July 15, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

Morin appeared in provincial court in custody on Sept. 13 after being arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court the day before. He was released with conditions until his Oct. 3 court date.

Facing sex charge

Matthew White, 41, of Upper Woodstock, appeared in provincial court on Oct. 3 to answer a sex charge laid by RCMP.

White was charged with invitation to sexual touching involving a female minor in connection with an incident on June 3 in Bloomfield. The matter was adjourned for plea until Oct. 31 at 9:30 a.m. at the request of his defence counsel.

Youth charged in Ribfest incident to enter plea

A 17-year-old male youth from Woodstock will appear in provincial court on Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on charges related to an incident during Ribfest at Connell Park.

The youth appeared in provincial court in custody by video on Aug. 29 for a fitness hearing following his 30-day mental health assessment. He was found fit to stand trial and released with conditions.

He was charged with assault, uttering threats, possession of weapons dangerous to the public peace (knives, swords and a firearm) and possession of break-in tools following an incident at Ribfest on July 21 at Connell Park.

He was also charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and concealing a weapon (a knife) concerning an earlier incident at Woodstock High School on March 28.

During his release, Associate Chief Judge Brian C. McLean ordered the youth to seek counselling for mental health and addiction. A publication ban protects the identity of the accused because he is under the age of 18.

Arrest warrant issued

The court issued an arrest warrant for Jerod Nowlan, 40, of Woodstock First Nation, after failing to appear in provincial court on Oct. 3 to monitor his upcoming trial.

Nowlan is scheduled to appear for trial in provincial court on Dec. 14 at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to an assault charge.

RCMP charged him with assault on a minor in connection with an incident between April 1 and April 30 in Coldstream. He made his first court appearance on Sept. 12 and pleaded not guilty.

Awaiting plea on two charges

Tusha Mae Sawyer, 45, of Carlingford, appeared in provincial court on Oct. 3 for plea on two charges laid by RCMP. The matter was adjourned until Oct. 24 at 9:30 a.m. at the request of her defence counsel.

Sawyer was charged with aggravated assault against another woman and indictable breach of probation in connection with an incident on July 29 at Gladwyn. The court heard she was also subject to a release order on Aug. 3.

Woodstock woman to stand trial

Hailey Vandijk, 23, of Beardsley Road in Woodstock, will appear for trial in provincial court on July 8, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to two charges laid by RCMP.

Vandijk was charged with break, enter and theft at a garage and committing mischief causing property damage to two vehicles in connection with an incident on May 6 at Holmesville. She entered her not-guilty plea at a court appearance on Oct. 3.

Awaiting plea on two charges

Tristan Mathias Kelleter, 25, of Woodstock, will appear in provincial court on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. for plea on two charges by Woodstock Police.

Kelleter was charged with two counts of uttering threats concerning an incident on May 27 near Jacksonville. He appeared in provincial court on Sept. 12 when the matter was adjourned to the new date at the request of his defence counsel.

Trial scheduled on sex charge

James Robert Moore, 44, of Fredericton, will appear for trial in provincial court on Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to a sex charge laid by Woodstock Police.

Moore appeared in provincial court in custody for a bail hearing on July 4 and was released with conditions. He was arrested on a warrant after he failed to appear for his trial in March. Woodstock Police charged him with sexual assault concerning an incident in Woodstock on June 5, 2021.

Awaiting plea on assault charge

Kathryn Graham, 26, of Grafton, appeared in provincial court on Oct. 3 to answer an assault charge. The matter was adjourned for plea until Oct. 10 at 9:30 a.m. at the request of her defence counsel.

RCMP charged Graham with assault on a minor in connection with an incident on May 1 in Grafton.

Jacksonville man faces another charge

Shayne Cameron, 30, of Jacksonville, appeared in provincial court on Oct. 3 to answer a new charge of possession of stolen property. The matter was adjourned for plea until Oct. 31 at 9:30 a.m.

Cameron was charged in connection with an incident on April 11 in Woodstock. He also appeared in provincial court in September and pleaded not guilty to two other charges laid by RCMP. His trial date was set for July 4, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. A monitoring date was also scheduled for April 2, 2024, at 9:30 a.m.

Cameron was charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and possession of a firearm while prohibited concerning an incident on Jan. 24 at Juniper. He entered his not-guilty plea at a court appearance on Sept. 19.

Kincardine man to stand trial

Jerry Inman, 68, of Kincardine, will appear for trial in provincial court on July 31 and Aug. 1, 2024, at 9:30 a.m. after pleading not guilty to a firearm charge laid by RCMP.

Inman was charged with intentionally discharging a firearm into or at a place, knowing another person was present in connection with an incident on April 27 in Kincardine. He entered his not-guilty plea at a court appearance on Oct. 3. A monitoring date for his trial was also set for Feb. 27 at 9:30 a.m.

Returning to court for plea

Gregory Sparks, 23, of no fixed address, will appear in provincial court on Oct. 24 at 9:30 a.m. for plea on two charges laid by RCMP.

Sparks was charged with assault with a weapon (a utility knife) involving a female victim and uttering threats concerning an incident on April 20 at Centreville.

He appeared in court on Oct. 3 when the matter was adjourned to the new date to allow him more time to consult legal counsel. The court heard Sparks is also facing other charges in Fredericton.
