Seven young women vie for the title
Seven contestants will compete for the Miss Nackawic-Millville crown on Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Nackawic Arena.
The pageant, which turns 51 this year, was formally known as Miss Nackawic before municipal amalgamation two years ago.
Karen Gillespie is the coordinator for the event. Gillespie has been working with the contestants to prepare them for the big night.
“I’ve worked with these girls for the last six weeks on their walk, how they talk into a microphone, and how to be a lady. It’ll be fun just to see who’s chosen,” said Gillespie.
The night will start with the contestants performing their choreographed dance and move into the casual walk, evening walk, and, lastly, the question portion of the pageant.
Six titles will be won: Miss Poster, Miss Autobiography, Miss Congeniality, First Princess, Second Princess, and Miss Nackawic-Millville.
Gillespie will present the Joyce Gordon Memorial Award to the participant who has performed the most community service and is always willing to help others.
“When she passed away from cancer, I started this Joyce Gordon Memorial Award, so that goes to the girl who best exemplifies what she was all about,” said Gillespie.
Although the Miss New Brunswick pageant was cancelled this year, Gillespie decided to continue with the Miss Nackawic-Millville pageant. She believes the pageant experience is a wonderful way for shy girls to become confident young women.
Gillespie hopes the Miss New Brunswick pageant will return next year so future contestants can experience it.
The pageant is one of many events happening during the Festival of the Bend week in Nackawic-Millville.
“I think it will be a fun night for everybody. My goal is that everybody that comes enjoys it, as well as the girls participating in it,” said Gillespie.
