Woodstock Mayor presents Citizen Recognition Awards

Residents honoured at special event

On Sunday evening, March 29, citizens were presented with the Woodstock Mayor’s Citizen Recognition Awards. The seven awards this year include one business nominee and one youth nominee. Six people won this year’s Communities in Bloom’s ‘Best Garden’ award.

William Davidson
Will Davidson has been a significant influence in the Woodstock community for decades through his music and mentorship. Since 1997, he has taught at Woodstock High School, shaping students as a talented musician and inspiring band leader. Along with his wife, Cindy, also a music teacher, he chose to invest their lives in Woodstock.

Will has dedicated countless hours beyond the classroom, preparing choirs for various events and directing numerous drama productions, truly showcasing his commitment to his students. His contributions have fostered confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging in many young people, leaving a lasting impact that extends beyond high school.

Richard & Carol Furrow
Richard and Carol Furrow are essential to the operations of Harvest House Woodstock, where they manage the drop-in center with dignity, kindness, and a warm welcome for everyone. Richard and Carol’s contributions include coordinating volunteers, leading recovery groups, and ensuring a safe and clean environment. Carol also organizes 16 volunteer teams to provide weekly meals, highlighting her dedication. Additionally, they support the Salvation Army Kettle Drive during the holiday season. Their compassion and commitment make a significant impact.

Matthew & Hilary Stockford
Matthew and Hilary Stockford are actively engaged in their community, dedicating their time to various initiatives. They serve on several boards, including the Carleton Manor and Valley Food Bank, and Hilary is involved with the Woodstock Rotary Club. Their strong commitment to community well-being, seniors, food security, and civic engagement is evident in their support for local non-profits and schools, particularly their contributions to the Valley Food Bank. Additionally, they are the driving force behind the Big Iron Show and Shine, a family-friendly event that celebrates the trucking industry while raising significant funds for local charities through activities like live music, food vendors, and fireworks. Their efforts both entertain and benefit the community immensely.

Lisa Porter
Lisa Porter is a remarkable community member and the founder of the Woodstock Paddling Club, who has greatly impacted Woodstock and its surroundings. She has introduced dragon boat racing, creating inclusive and accessible opportunities for people of all ages to enjoy the water and foster connections. Her initiatives have enhanced Canada Day celebrations with the popular July 1st Floats activities, drawing spectators to watch local and provincial teams compete, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Lisa dedicates numerous hours to coaching teams and preparing participants for success, while also expanding opportunities for youth, including leading the Woodstock High School dragon boat team. Beyond her work on the river, she is a committed educator who organizes major school events and actively participates in her church community. Her enthusiasm, generosity, and spirit of inclusion help bring people together, strengthening the community as a whole.

Holly Acheson
Holly Acheson is a vibrant community leader known for organizing the Christmas House Tour, a beloved event that showcases beautifully decorated homes and marks the start of the holiday season. This event not only sells out quickly each year but also fosters a spirit of celebration and giving among participants. Beyond the Christmas Tour, Holly dedicates significant time to organizing and wrapping gifts for children in need, ensuring that over 60 children experienced the joy of Christmas last year. Her leadership inspires others to contribute, creating a wave of generosity that benefits many families in Woodstock. Holly’s commitment extends throughout the year as she supports various causes, including her involvement with the 100 Women Who Care committee. Through her actions, she exemplifies the power of kindness, compassion, and community, inspiring others to do the same.

Creek Village Gallery & Cafe
The Creek Village Gallery & Café, celebrating its 10th anniversary in Woodstock, has become a cherished destination for locals and visitors alike. Situated in downtown, it offers exceptional coffee and locally sourced meals while serving as a platform for showcasing the talent of New Brunswick artists and artisans. As a nonprofit cooperative, it serves as a vibrant cultural hub, featuring a diverse range of artistic expressions, from pottery and painting to literature and woodworking. One of its standout initiatives is the Young Artist Spotlight, which allows emerging artists, some as young as 9, to display and sell their work, providing valuable encouragement and exposure. Additionally, the café emphasizes using locally sourced, often organic ingredients for its homemade offerings, demonstrating a commitment to the community and local producers. Overall, the Creek Village Gallery & Café is more than just a café; it is a creative gathering place and a cornerstone of the community.

Gracelyn Grant – Youth Nominee
Gracelyn Grant, a Grade 11 student at Woodstock High School, exemplifies youth leadership through her extensive involvement in her school community. As President of the Planet Youth Club, a member of the Leadership Team, the Interact Club, and the Student Wellness Committee, she demonstrates a strong commitment to her peers. Notably, Gracelyn serves as the Chair of Woodstock’s inaugural Youth Council, where she guides meetings, manages communications, and builds connections with the Town Council and community partners. Her contributions include writing to a Minister and participating in discussions with the Minister of Education, showcasing her impressive communication skills. Additionally, she recently represented Woodstock Youth at the Canada We Want Conference in Ontario and applied to volunteer with Horizon Health Network at the Upper River Valley Hospital. In her spare time, Gracelyn plays volleyball and performs on stage. Her actions highlight the importance of investing in youth and inspiring others in the community.
