Driver of SUV dies after crash near Salisbury
The RCMP is investigating an incident that ended with the death of a woman in mental distress.
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Hans Ouellette said that on Tuesday, June 9, at approximately 8:30 a.m., members of the Sackville RCMP were dispatched to investigate a report of a woman in mental distress and known to be driving an SUV on the Trans Canada Highway near Aulac.
Police attempted to intercept the vehicle by turning on their emergency equipment. The vehicle did not stop, and no pursuit was initiated. RCMP Air Services were contacted and assisted in locating the vehicle.
Cpl. Oulette explained that at approximately 9:30 a.m., members of the Codiac Regional and the Caledonia Region RCMP located the SUV again on Highway 2, near Moncton’s Mountain Road exit, and attempted again to intercept the vehicle with the help of a tire deflation device. The tire deflation device was ineffective at stopping the SUV, and the driver continued driving without stopping for police. No pursuit was initiated.
Cpl. Ouellette said RCMP later located the crashed vehicle on Highway 2, near Salisbury. At this time, it is believed the SUV collided with a guardrail and rolled over several times.
When police arrived at the crash site, they discovered that the driver, a 28-year-old woman from Negotkuk (Tobique First Nation), died at the scene as a result of her injuries.
A New Brunswick RCMP collision reconstructionist is assisting with the ongoing investigation, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the woman’s exact cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing.
