Man who was in custody transported to hospital

The Woodstock Police Force (WPF) has asked the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) to investigate a vehicle collision that occurred after a police chase on Oct. 10.

In a news release issued on Oct. 23, the WPF said one of its members observed a vehicle travelling at a “high rate of speed” along Main Street in Woodstock.

“An attempt was made to stop the vehicle; however, it failed to do so and continued southbound at excessive speed. A short time later, the vehicle collided with a power pole and caused damage to a residence at 403 Main Street. The occupants fled the scene on foot,” the release stated.

Approximately two hours later, the male driver was located and taken into custody. He was transported to the Woodstock Police Station for further investigation.

“While in custody, the male began to complain of pain. As a precaution, an ambulance was called, and he was transported to the Upper River Valley Hospital for assessment. He was later admitted with suspected internal injuries believed to be the result of the collision.”

The news release went on to say that the male was released from police custody to facilitate medical treatment. Criminal charges are expected to be laid at a later date.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the Woodstock Police Force notified the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT), which has invoked its mandate and will investigate what led to the collision. As a result, the Woodstock Police Force will not be commenting further until the SiRT investigation has concluded,” the release noted.
