May 4 meeting discusses road safety, surplus equipment, and marina news
Councillor Colin Trail mentioned that he’s been getting many calls over the past two weeks regarding the Howland Ridge Road (which is not paved) located in the community of Millville. He said the amount of dust from the dirt road has caused safety issues, including a recent close call with a school bus. He said there are 51 residences on this road.
“Another issue is that this road is lower than the driveways. Last year it was 3” below people’s driveways,” said Trail. “This has been an ongoing issue for a few years.”
Council agreed that this is a public safety issue and will send correspondence and pictures to Premier Susan Holt, Chuck Chiasson, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure and the District Engineer with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. Councillor Trail will take updated pictures.
Surplus equipment items awarded
Council accepted a bid from Dumfries Maples for $3500.00 for surplus equipment from the Dumfries Community Hall. The two items include a Garland Range Oven and a new hood vent. They will be responsible for arranging the disconnection and removal of the range and hood vent and all costs associated with the process.
Councillor thanked for work with Public Works Committee
During a public works update, Deputy Mayor Greg MacFarlane thanked Councillor Robert Simpson for his work over the last ten years on this committee.
“His advocacy with the department and his relationship got a lot of projects done,” said MacFarlane.
“I want to thank him for his work on council and particularly on this committee,” he said.
Simpson did not reoffer for the 2026 Municipal Election.
Marina slip rentals now available
In the municipality’s recreation report, it was mentioned that rentals at the Big Axe Marina are now available, and the season will start on May 18, after the 2026 Destination Nackawic Bass Open tournament.
