Deputy mayor appointed during June 1 meeting

At the council meeting on Monday evening, Greg MacFarlane was nominated to serve another term as the deputy mayor. MacFarlane said it is an honour and accepted the nomination from Councillor Colin Trail.

Shout out to NHS Gives Back

Students from Nackawic Senior High School (NHS) participated in NHS Gives Back on Friday, May 15. The annual event is the school’s way of giving back to the community.

Mayor Tim Fox said he noticed several students cleaning up the waterfront area before the bass fishing tournament commenced that weekend. Fox stated he was very appreciative of their work.

Council reviewed a letter from NHS thanking council for participating in the NHS Gives Back Program. The letter stated that it was the school’s pleasure to help the communities and that this was their way of thanking them for their continued support of all school functions.

Mayor Fox said it is a very worthy program and that council should be thanking NHS for it.

Sidewalks a safety issue in Millville

In a letter from Millville resident, Paul Brown, he stated the sidewalks in the Millville area are very dangerous to walk on.

Brown uses a walker and said he cannot walk on asphalt, and that navigating sidewalks with it is very difficult. He said there are many seniors in Millville who have the same issue with walking on the sidewalks.

Brown went on to say that most seniors either walk on the road or don’t walk at all. He said that now that there is a store in Millville again, it would be nice to be able to walk there for a coffee or just to meet some friends.

He hopes something can be done to remedy the situation. Councillor Colin Trail said he went to look at them and agreed with Brown.

“They are worse at the upper end, and we need to get something started right away,” said Trail.

CAO Kathryn Clark said the sidewalks are definitely a project that needs to be done this year, and funds from the sale of the Youth Center could possibly be used for this.

Council agreed to have the Public Works Director obtain pricing. She stated they will do as much as they can in-house so the money can go farther. Council will wait for a report back.

Millville Cemetery water drainage issues

Council reviewed a letter from Glen McGuigan, Chairperson of the Millville Cemetery Association. In the letter, McGuigan asks council for assistance with a drainage issue affecting a section of the Millville Cemetery. McGuigan said the entire cemetery has been mown for the past 15 years without any water drainage issues. He said something has changed in the last two years.

“The lowest part of the cemetery could not be mown last year until last August as it was very wet,” said McGuigan. He said they are already encountering the same issue again this year.

McGuigan said that after some investigating, it was determined that the village storm sewer, which was installed years ago on the west side of Route 104, has a manhole and culvert under Route 104 that drains to the east side of 104 onto the property of a local resident, which is in close proximity to the cemetery property.

He said there is currently a significant amount of water running into the ditch on the east side of 104 from this culvert.

“This excessive water eventually flows onto a section of the cemetery, keeping it wet, before draining to the ditch of the old railbed below the cemetery,” stated McGuigan.

He questioned whether the village storm sewer is partially clogged with silt from road runoff over the years, causing higher water levels in the sewer and redirecting it across the road instead of continuing its flow through the drain along Route 104 to its original discharge point a kilometre down the road.

McGuigan believes that, if he’s correct, a high-pressure clean would restore the drain to the way it was designed to work. He asked council to assist with the matter.

Councillor Colin Trail said it could be blocked or caved in. He also said the storm basins might need to be cleaned out. Council will ask Public Works to check with a camera and report back to council.
