District statement on closure of Dr. Clay Marco’s medical practice

In response to the announcement that Dr. Clay Marco will be closing his medical practice in September, Mayor Andrew Harvey read the following statement on behalf of the District of Carleton North at their June 10 council session.

“The Council of the District of Carleton North wishes to express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Clay Marco for his dedicated services to our residents,” said Mayor Harvey. “His professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the health and well-being of our people have made a lasting impact.  We fully recognize and understand that Horizon Health has reached out over the last few months in an effort to facilitate Dr. Marco continuing his current practice.

As a community that fully recognizes the contribution of Dr. Marco, we will keep working with Horizon Health to find a solution where Dr. Marco can continue serving the people of this area in the years to come.  We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Marco for his years of dedicated service and offer our best wishes as he moves forward.”

Request for early ice

Tim McCarthy from Carleton Minor Hockey asked the council to consider having the ice in place at the Northern Carleton Civic Centre for September 1.

He noted that the “hockey landscape” has been changing and that the majority of students today are taking advantage of extra hockey opportunities. He also said that parents want their kids on the ice “as much as possible so they can compete with other towns” that offer more ice time than Carleton North.

McCarthy told the mayor and councillors that having early ice would allow for extra training, extend the season, and decrease the cost of having to use the ice at out-of-town arenas while waiting for the local ice to be available.

The council agreed to discuss the matter further with the Recreation Department and the CAO.

2025 Sports Wall of Recognition inductees

Councillor Mike Stewart announced the 2025 inductees for the Carleton North Sports Wall of Recognition.

This year’s inductees include the 1965-1966 Centreville Regional High School Boys basketball team, team builder Frank Cluff, and athlete Joe Trevors Sr.

The inductees will be honoured in a ceremony in October 2025.

Student councillors recognized

Deputy Mayor Karen Hargrove presented student councillors Barret Stone and Sarah Harvey with certificates of recognition in honour of their dedication and contribution to the District of Carleton North during the past year.

Stone expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve.

“[This] was something I’ve never experienced before,” he told the mayor and councillors during the meeting. “It was a great experience to have in politics and it opened my interests a lot. I’ll be taking [politics] in the future for sure.”

Mayor Harvey added his congratulations to the students, also acknowledging Stone’s upcoming graduation. Harvey said that the Student Councillor program will resume next fall.
