Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick to put on workshops for councillors
After the recent municipal elections, municipalities across the river valley are gearing up for the swearing-in of new councils.
In Hartland and the District of Carleton North, the mayors and councillors will be sworn in on Tuesday, May 26, in their respective council chambers. Both ceremonies start at 6:30 p.m.
In Lakeland Ridges, the swearing-in ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 27, at 6 p.m. in the council chambers in Meductic.
Nackawic-Millville will swear in its council and mayor on Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m.
Southern Victoria council and mayor will be sworn in on Tuesday, June 2 at 6: 30 p.m., and Woodstock’s swearing-in ceremony will take place on Tuesday, June 9 at 6 p.m.
In addition to the swearing-in of these new public officials, all will undergo a training session.
“The orientation sessions are really meant to give new and returning councillors a sense of what to expect as a local government official, what the roles are, and what the responsibilities are,” said Dan Murphy, Executive Director of The Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick (UMNB).
According to Murphy, training can be either ongoing or a series of workshops, and the experience can vary from council to council depending on what is requested or required.
In addition to the training, new councillors will receive practice in basic communications and in learning the code of conduct.
“I think it’s important to make sure in any position that folks have the necessary information to be effective at their roles,” said Murphy.
He also noted that the training serves as a solid foundation for the councillors and helps them better serve their constituents.
